maternity and care
83.6% of the main caregivers are women. These women are in the average age of 52 years, and 44% of them are dedicated to housework.
The care activity they carry out can be explained through a traditional model, according to which the care system is characterized by the fact that the relatives of people in a state of physical vulnerability make a series of sacrifices to meet the needs and care demands.
linked to the dependent state of the patient.
This, in turn, is related to the informal support assumed by women, given the sexual division of labor, which assigns women a role of assistance to others, which allows social welfare.
Free or Paid Care:
However, care ends up becoming an unpaid, invisible and undervalued job for them.
In addition, caring for a person in a state of dependency is related to a sudden interruption that affects the lives of women, which has repercussions in different areas of their daily lives, due to the restrictions and limitations that care entails.
This is a task that is important to underline, and that requires the assistance and attention of the different care actors, in order to configure the roles and action strategies in another way and favor the development of resilient processes, since it has been found that the level of resilience is an indicator of efficacy in the activity of care and of adaptive and positive coping, which increases the quality of life of those who exercise care.
The story of a caring mother of the FCV:
No one said being a mom is easy. For this caregiver, perhaps the most complicated thing has been the change she has experienced after the birth of her son, who was born with a complex congenital heart disease, and knowing that, due to this, the future will bring with it several unavoidable challenges for her, as a mother and in charge of your baby's health care.
This mother is 18 years old. She comes from a municipality located in the department of Santander, and until a month and a half ago she lived with her mother and father, but since the birth of her son she has been dealing with a long hospitalization process, given the medical complication with which the baby was born. 'I didn't expect to get pregnant, let alone have a seriously ill child,' she says.
from studying to taking care of baby:
The change has been great and adapting has not been easy. She went from studying to taking care of her baby and from living comfortably at home to sleeping in a clinic far from her family.
However, she highlights the support she has received since it all happened: "My family has helped me a lot, my parents, my aunts, cousins... even people from whom I didn't expect anything."
Your expectation of the future is equally important. He hopes that his son will recover quickly, with the necessary medical help, so that he can work and study simultaneously, managing to continue his life normally.
She says her bravery and ability to respond to an unexpected and difficult situation have kept her going and keep her motivated for the future as a mother and caregiver.
